OLD GUARD
The old guard is an action, drama, film released in 2020, and tells the story of five immortals warriors, Andy an immortal warrior who leads a band of mercenaries named after the oldest currently active regiment in the U.S army. They are also just old because they are immortal, Andromache or Andy as she called is the oldest of immortals, with the movie stating that she could be born as far as 4,500 BC. Originating in Scythia which is modern-day Eurasia in Greek mythology, the character of Andromache translates to the fighter of men and her character represents the suffering of women during the Trojan war and she has known nothing but suffering for thousands of years. The first person she met, who was immortal like her was sentenced to spend eternity drowning over and over again in an iron coffin and her lover was killed on the battlefield in front of her. Andy has become faded with life and the world in general.
The story begins with Andy (Charlize Theron) waiting in the lobby at the hotel and she sees on the news, the image of civil war in Syria and unrest and tired it seems no matter what she and the old guard does, it doesn't have any impact on the world and we will find out later this couldn't be further from the truth for Andy to grow as a character. She will need to realize that the old guard does indeed serve a worthwhile purpose for humanity at the end of the act. As the story progress, Andy and the old guard are set up by a man named James Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) he wires them into a trap to show this big pharmaceutical manufacturer, Steven Merrick (Harry melling) that immortals exist. You see Copley lost his wife a few years back and believes that if the power of these immortals can be studied, perhaps it can prevent disease like the on that took his wife's life but what he doesn't know is that Merrick doesn't care at all about helping humanity, he's in it for the money. In Afghanistan, we meet Nile Freeman (Kiki Layne) a marine who finds out she is immortal as well. Unlike Andy, she isn't faded by the world and believes that she can make a difference. we see her giving out candy and helping a group of women whose town has been terrorized by a terrorist. After finding out she is immortal the old guard gets alerted via dreams, they dream of each other, the dreams stop when they meet, so they believe being together is their destiny. They form a team to take revenge on Copley knowing that they can never live in peace until they stop while hiding out in France. The team is attacked and Joe (Marwan Kenzari) and Nicky (Luca Marinelli) are captured, she knows what it's like to lose a team member, centuries ago she loses Quynh (Ngo Thanh Van). So she makes it her mission to free them, perhaps hoping it will give her some redemption. Andy, Sebastian (Matthias Schoenaerts) and the Nile prepare to infiltrate Copley, the Nile says this life is not for her, she wants to be with her family even though Sebastian says it will torture he to watch them grow and die. Andy gives her a gun and sees her off but the Nile later finds out that the magazine is empty and remember it was Sebastian who gives it to her, she knows that she has to go back because Sebastian is playing to betray Andy and that's exactly what he does. He shoots Andy not knowing that she had lost her immortality, yes the immortals can lose their power, they just don't know when. Sebastian believes if Merrick can find a cure to extend life then perhaps he can also find a cure to end their immortality. Sebastian however immediately regrets his decision when he finds out Andy can be killed. Copley jumped ship to realizing that Merrick has gone too far, he is intending to lock up the old guard as a prisoner forever. The Nile ends up saving the team and before the final confrontation with Merrick, Andy tells the Nile that losing her immortality is not a coincidence, Nile was brought into her life to make her remember that there are still things worth living for. The Nile sacrifices herself by standing in the way of Andy, getting shot, and throwing herself off the building with Merrick. Copley is one of the final scenes to help them fulfill their purpose of making the world a better place, this is all a set up for a sequel which begins with the ex-communication of Sebastian as a punishment for his betrayal. Sebastian is forced to live hundred years away from the old guard, this is actually a pretty big punishment since old guard has been his family for the past couple years and now he has to say goodbye to them. Six months later Sebastian has turned to drink and come home to see Quynh, one of the original members of the old guard and the one who apparently went crazy after being locked in an iron coffin and drowned for centuries.
The cast of this movie had done their job pretty great and especially Andy played by Charlize Theron is amazing as always. We have grown to except that superheroes are fantastic but there is a level of vulnerability in all the characters that makes it different. I think a lot of superheroes film you know make it look really cool to be able to do stuff they could do but you see in this movie superheroes are struggling with what it means to have that gift and the loneliness that comes with that. I think a lot of people will relate to those moments of feeling in this movie.

So, if you are bored or filling dull, I definitely recommend this movie to give it a try, who knows it may change your mood and trust me it's totally worth watching.
